SAN CLEMENTE ISLAND CHAPTER, NSDAR

Following the founding principles of DAR - Education, Patriotism and Historic Preservation

American History: San Clemente Island Chapter, NSDAR, coordinates an American History essay contest annually for fifth through eighth-graders in local schools. Essays are reviewed by independent judges and prizes are awarded.

Commemorative Events: Our chapter participates in the Memorial Day ceremony and laying of wreaths at San Clemente Community Center each year to honor our military and veterans.

Community Classroom: Our program on George Washington and the American Revolution was presented to over 600 elementary school children at Concordia Elementary in San Clemente. We distributed American flags, coloring pages, and crayons. What a great way to celebrate Presidents’ Day!

Conservation:  San Clemente Island Chapter learns about the environment and conservation through monthly reports and quarterly essays on water conservation, pollinator gardens, reforestation, etc.

Constitution Week: San Clemente Island Chapter, NSDAR, celebrates the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787 with library displays, a luncheon, and the ringing of the bells at Mission San Juan Capistrano. City Councils award a proclamation annually declaring September 17-23 Constitution Week, a time of reflection, education, and celebration.

CSSDAR: Our beautiful state headquarters in Glendora, California

DAR Good Citizens: Our chapter recognizes good citizens from local high schools with an annual essay contest, luncheon, and scholarships.

DAR Project Patriot: Supporting our military is a priority with San Clemente Island Chapter, NSDAR. We participate in a holiday turkey dinner and toy drive for Camp Pendleton Marines, as well as their annual baby shower in the spring. Throughout the year, our chapter provides cookies and sweet treats for Marine events.

DAR Service to Veterans: San Clemente Island Chapter honors our Veterans every year with a luncheon in November.  Throughout the year we contribute food and clothing to the Long Beach Veterans Hospital and provide birthday and holiday cards to Veterans.

Historic Preservation: In celebration of our chapter's 60th anniversary, we placed a plaque at Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens to honor the founder of San Clemente, Ole Hanson. His beautiful home, built in 1926, still sits atop a hill overlooking the San Clemente Pier and the Pacific Ocean.

Literacy Promotion: Education is one of the founding principles of DAR. Our chapter has donated books to hospitals, schools and libraries.

Luncheon and Fashion Show: Every other year, San Clemente Island Chapter, NSDAR, holds a luncheon and fashion show for members, friends, and family.  A delicious lunch is served, complete with champagne and desserts. Our members serve as models and enjoy showcasing spring fashions from a local shop. Fabulous raffle baskets complete the afternoon and contribute to this fun, fundraising event.

Wreaths Across America:  Chapter members, friends and family sponsor wreaths to be placed on the graves of Veterans at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona del Mar. A truly moving and special day in December.
